Learning Thai

Sawasdee Krab (Welcome)

Sawasdee krab, and welcome to Learning Thai! The Learning Thai website and Wiki was created to supplement the Thai language program at Wat Buddhanusorn in Fremont, CA.

The primary purpose of this page is to teach you how to access, log in, and use the Learning Thai wiki. You can also use it for quick access to resources for learning the Thai language. Take a quick look at the Resources box to the right, and run your mouse over the links for a short explanation of each.

Using The Wiki

This site gives you tools to learn how to write the letters of the Thai alphabet, how they sound, how to tell which tone to use, and how to form them into words.  It also contains a vocabulary list that is growing daily, and some ideas of how to use this site in a Thai language program.  Because this site is a wiki, it is ever-changing and growing to keep up with the needs of learners and instructors like you!

Navitator PanelTo get started, check out the Navigator panel on the far right side of the Wiki page. The Navigator list is organized in a suggested learning order, but feel free to browse and pick out topics that interest you, or fit your learning needs.  The first few sections cover the basics of how the letters are written, how they fit together into classes, or tone families, Thai language grammar, and the Thai numbers.  The following sections introduce vocabulary words and exercise ideas, as well as a "playground" where you can create exercises for your students or fellow learners and some more advanced aspects of the language such as "ending consonants" and "transformed vowels".

You can view the website without logging in. Just click the link labelled The Learning Thai Wiki in the pane on the right side of this page, and you can browse the website, review learning materials, get your assignments, etc. Before you do though, check out the other links in the top section to learn how to navigate and edit the wiki.

Login LinkIf you would like to edit or add a page or post a comment, you must be logged in and your user account must be enabled. If you don't have a user account, it's very easy to request one. To log in or request access, click one of the login links. There are links in several places on every page, but the most convenient is usually the Create an Account or Log In link in the upper right corner of every page.

Request Access ButtonOnce you are on the log in page, you can enter your username and password if you already have one, or click the Request Access button to send a request to the site administrator. Once your request is approved, you will receive a notice via email.

Additional Resources

The Additional Resources section of the right-hand pane of this page lists a few useful resources for you to use for your own learning, or to share with learners (either your students or your fellow learners). They range from other language learning websites to websites about Thai culture and ways to involve yourself in Thai culture without leaving the Bay Area.
